Golfing enthusiasts yearn for the sunny weather and mild temperatures that go hand-in-hand with autumn. Along with the thrill of the game, golfers can enjoy the changing of the seasons as fall's foliage adds color and drama to the course. Because of the sport's popularity, golf courses are plentiful throughout the states that line the Eastern Seaboard.
North Carolina offers more than 500 golf courses. Some are easy to navigate while others offer a golfing challenge than can end in heartbreak. One such course is The Preserve at Lake Jordan in Chapel Hill considered to be a "thrilling rollercoaster ride." One of the state's best-loved courses is Ocean Ridge Plantation Golf in Sunset Beach. North Carolina's Pinehurst area is known as the Home of American Golf. The combination of sandy soil, rolling hills, pine forests and mild climate make the Sandhills region of the state ideal for golf. South Carolina offers 380 courses that include some of the finest golf resorts in the country. Myrtle Beach, considered a "Mecca" for golf lovers, boasts more than 100 of the most unique, challenging and picturesque golf courses in the world. Golfers can experience the beauty of oceanfront holes or stand in the midst of giant live oaks draped in Spanish moss on the site of a colonial rice plantation. The majority of the Myrtle Beach area's golf courses are open to the public. Virginia is home to some of the country's finest courses. Two of the state's public courses - The Highland Course at Primland and the Spring Creek Golf Club - have gained recognition as two of the best new public courses in Virginia. Golfers can mix a day on the greens with a night of relaxation at The Homestead in Virginia or Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. If you're game isn't up to par, many golf resorts have golfing schools or pros who can help you with your swing. Check out the resort where you will be staying to see if it offers lessons with the pros or any type of classes that might prove beneficial. Golf is also on the agenda in Bayside Atlantic City, New Jersey where you'll find the one of the country's oldest country clubs, the New Jersey Country Club, and in New York, from Long Island's East End to the Catskills and Adirondacks. Adirondack Park has 60 picturesque golf courses in the 6 million-acre wilderness park. The most challenging part of golf in the region is keeping an eye on your shot as some of the most breathtaking views of mountains and lakes can be had from the cedar-lined fairways and rolling greens of the signature courses. |
