Okay, create your vacation. Really? What do I want to do? What can I afford? Should I splurge? Should I try something new or should I do what I like? Personally, I have a few requirements when going on vacation. First, I like to have a spacious room. It doesn't need to be beautiful, but I like to enough room to sit on a comfortable chair, read a book, watch TV and relax in private. Second, I enjoy walking out of my hotel to a restaurant, shops, etc. This need not be in the center of town, but the ability to walk just makes a vacation feel like a vacation. Three, I prefer to be nearby the destination's premier attraction. Meaning, I like to stay not too far from the beach if on a beach vacation or near the mountains or lake if on a rural country trip. That's it. The rest will take care of itself from there as far as I am concerned.

Case in point. My wife and I took a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and guess where we stayed? That's right, not too far from the beach. Sun, surf, fine dining and fruity drinks. The place was just beautiful and I know that the trip would have been a little disappointing if he stayed further away. The same can be said for our trip to Saratoga Springs, NY. We stayed right in town, enjoyed the old architecture, period hotels, shopping and had a fantastic time. Also, don't forget the spectacle that is the Saratoga Racetrack. This place truly takes you back to an earlier time.

Now this is how I build a trip, but the process is universal and should be employed by everyone. Here are a few things to think about before booking any vacation. One, what am I looking to do on vacation? Relax, tour, exercise, some combination? This is critical to identifying a trip that will meet your expectations. Far too often people can be swayed by a destinations attractions, but if those attractions are not in line with your tastes, then they will be wasted. Second, what are your accommodation expectations and needs? Do you spend a significant amount of time in your room relaxing or are you on the go at all times? This is a personal decision. Do yourself a favor and be honest with yourself. My wife and I like to lounge in the room from time-to-time and order room service. We're lazy and we know it. Think about the length of your stay. Some destinations are ideal for a weekend, but can become tiresome after the third full day. Plan accordingly. Good luck building your very own vacation.
